Pink amethyst is a new color variety of quartz coming from Argentine Patagonia. Several studies have been carried recently in the United States, Argentina and Germany in order to determine the nature of its coloration.
Specimens color range between pale to moderate purplish pink. Optical, spectroscopic, Raman and microchemical analyses show that the pink color in Patagonian quartz crystals is caused by the presence of two types of iron: iron activated by exposure to natural radiation, same crhomophore than in the very well-known violet amethyst, and iron as microscopic hematite particles. In this sense, they are not rose quartz or pink quartz as classically defined, and since the color of amethyst is, by definition, also caused by iron, the Patagonian specimens are referred to as “pink amethyst”.
The geodes are extracted by hand from our mines "El Choique" and "Colli Cure"
The gemological studies made to the pink amethyst were published in Mineralogical Record, Vol. 51 nº 2 March-April 2020.
It was declared the stone of the year in 2018 by Robert Simmons
Color pink purple to purple red, medium to large crystals, perfect main crystals, excellent luster, fine to medium peel, surface of the druse occupied by the crystals> 80% and mouth opening that allows all to see well the crystals it contains.
Color lilac and purple pink to purple red, small to large crystals, main crystals may have some fractures, good luster, fine to thick peel, surface of the druse occupied by the crystals> 60% and mouth opening that allows you to see the crystals it contains
Color lilac and purple pink to purple red, small to large crystals, main crystals may have some fractures, good luster, fine to thick peel, surface of the druse occupied by the crystals> 60% and mouth opening that allows you to see the crystals it contains
Its color is not mainly purple, although in some cases it may have purple color at the roots of the crystals. They present interesting twins and varied quartz crystallizations.
